Calgarian dies from injuries in March crash

The fourth victim of the March 13 pedestrian-automobile crash has died from his injuries.

Ron Doornbos of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, passed away June 12, according to an article in The Calgary Herald. His daughter, Danielle Doornbos, confirmed his death.

Doornbos and his wife, Patti Lou, both 60, were visiting Ron’s brother and wife in Fountain Hills and were walking on a sidewalk when they were struck by a SUV at the corner of Saguaro and Palisades Boulevard.

The incident claimed the lives of his wife and Karen Bonta, 71, at the scene. Karen’s husband, Robert, 72, died at the hospital. The two couples did not know each other.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver of the SUV as Alex Bashaw. He has not been charged in connection with the collision.

Ron Doornbos suffered a traumatic head injury that required multiple surgeries. He remained in a medically induced coma and was transferred in late March to Calgary to be closer to his family.

Doornbos worked as a project coordinator with Telus for several years. He also had served as race director for the Harvest Half Marathon for nearly 20 years.

In an interview with a Calgary Herald reporter, Danielle Doornbos said some of her most treasured memories of her father were times spent skiing.

“He had a huge heart, she said. "We were very close as a family, always over for dinners. We would go camping and my dad taught me to ski.”

“Ski days were always funny because we always went with one of the dad’s brothers and we had to be first row of the parking lot. My dad ran perpetually late and so my uncle and I would be ready to go but he would be late so we would end up in the second row,” recalled Danielle.

“And my dad would always make the best lunches on ski days with homemade soup and sandwiches.”
