Fort McDowell awards $56K to local education

The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation has awarded a total of $56,000 in Prop 202 gaming grants to Fountain Hills entities for the 2017 year.

The Fountain Hills Unified School District will receive $51,000 and the Golden Eagle Education Foundation, Inc. will receive $5,000.

The Golden Eagle Education Foundation is a 501-c3 non-profit organization that coordinates funding for scholarships and education-related projects in local schools.

In 2002 Arizona voters approved Proposition 202 to authorize gaming operations for Arizona tribal communities. That proposition outlines an annual allocation of gaming revenues to state, city or county entities in the state for programs that benefit the general public. Primary beneficiary programs are related to public safety, education, mitigation of gaming impacts and promotion of commerce and economic development.

Fountain Hills has established a “pass through” program in which the funding goes to the Town of Fountain Hills to be distributed directly to the receiving agency. It is a direct pass through with the town receiving no fees or funding, unless it is for a designated town program.

Fort McDowell has shared Prop 202 monies for tourism funding with the town in the past.
