Sherry Leckrone ready to join council

Posted

When the Town Council meets again on Tuesday, Oct. 16, Sherry Leckrone will be sworn in to fill the seat left vacant when former Councilman Cecil Yates resigned to run for mayor earlier this year.

The council voted unanimously, 6-0, to appoint Leckrone at its Oct. 2 meeting, selecting her from five finalists among 11 who had applied for the appointment. Council members voted on a motion by Councilman Dennis Brown. There were no additional comments from council members on the decision.

Leckrone is an attorney who grew up in the area of Kankakee, Ill., which she describes as a stop on the route between Chicago and the University of Illinois at Champaign.

She is a graduate of IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, receiving her Juris Doctor degree with honors in 1990. Leckrone has worked as a prosecutor, public defender and in private practice in Illinois and Arizona. She came to Arizona and Fountain Hills in late 2004.

She worked with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office as a deputy county attorney from June 2007 until October 2017. She was bureau chief for two departments during her career with the County Attorney’s Office.

Leckrone said she believes she brings a wealth of experience as a public servant to the Town Council with her career as an attorney.

“The council serves as public servants,” Leckrone said. “My experience and skills added with other members will be helpful to the community.

“It is a prosecutor’s job to represent the community and do justice.”

Leckrone said she is willing to learn from experts on staff and disseminate information to the public to understand complex projects the town must deal with.

Leckrone said her entire career is based on dealing with opposing parties consistently.

“I have always been able to get along and find common ground,” Leckrone said.

Leckrone worked in private practice for a time after arriving in Fountain Hills. She served on the Planning and Zoning Commission from 2006 until 2010, serving at the same time as both Councilmen Dennis Brown and Yates.

“I feel gratified that the council has selected me to fill this position,” Leckrone said. “I look forward to working with them as we seek creative solutions to issues before the town.”

Leckrone said she decided to apply for the seat because the time is right.

“I’m at a time in my life when I will have the time and more flexibility to devote to the position,” she said. “I look forward to getting to work.

“I have enjoyed living in this town and love it. I want to do my part for it.”
