Posted

Eugene (Gene) Filewicz, age 94, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, March 10, 2019. His life journey ended in Fountain Hills, where he resided for the past 26 years.

Born Oct. 6, 1924 in Blue Island, Ill. to Victoria and Vincent Filewicz, he was the eldest to his brother, Erwin (wife, Frances), and Dolores, all members of “The Greatest Generation.”

Gene attended Pullman Tech High School in Chicago, Ill. Gene Joined the US Navy in May 1943 a few days after he met his sweetheart, Bernice (Terry) Terevich. He served on the USS Enterprise until February 1946 as an Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd class.

Gene married Terry in January 1947 and they shared 70 years together before her death in November 2016.

Gene kept his spirit of hard work and integrity during his employment as the plant manager for American Brake Shoe Forging Co. They raised four “Baby Boomers” making sure they all attended college.

Gene kept his love of the Navy by participating with the VFW, acting as Adjutant in Roseland, Ill. He also treasured his many memories by revisiting his Navy years with his compadres at annual Enterprise reunions.

Gene will be forever remembered by his family and friends. He is survived by his four children and spouses, Linda (Bill Schulz), Mark (Susan Brozenec), Donna (Tom Featherstone), Carol (Tom Alt); his eight grandchildren, Ryan, Cassie (John), Brett (Shayne), Michael (Heather), Whitney, Logan, Kelsey, Brian; and nieces and nephew, Karen, Cheryl, Debbie and David.

We will continue Geneʼs legacy – love for family and generous disposition with his great-grandchildren, Adam, Nixon, Niko, Ellis.
