Evelyn Munn

Posted

Evelyn Mary Munn of Fountain Hills, Arizona, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, at the age of 83.

Evelyn was born in New York City, N.Y., on Nov. 14, 1933, to Alice (Barden) and Charles McElhone and was raised along with four siblings in Forest Hills, Queens.

After high school, Evelyn worked for the District Attorney of New York and then achieved her dream of becoming a flight attendant for United Airlines, where she met and married the love of her life, a United Airlines and Navy pilot, Robert Munn, in 1957.

Bob and Evelyn settled in Walnut Creek, Calif., to raise their three children. After Bob’s passing in 1981, Evelyn obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley, Class of 1985.

A true patriot passionate about her country and her community, Evelyn embarked on a life of public service, elected to office for three terms as councilwoman and as mayor of the city of Walnut Creek.

Evelyn moved to Fountain Hills in 2001 where she continued her passion for country and community. Active in the Republican Party, she was elected to various precinct positions over the years, receiving many honors including Republican of the Year. Evelyn worked tirelessly to support local candidates and campaigns, and she could be found at the age of 80 campaigning door-to-door in the Arizona heat!

Evelyn served the community, volunteering her time to the Friends of the Library book store, the River of Time Museum, the Food Bank and the Kiwanis Club.

She had a deep and abiding faith in and love for the Lord that guided her life. Evelyn most profoundly expressed this faith through her unfailing love, generosity and caring for her family, friends, and fellow man.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband Robert, her mother and father, Charles McElhone and Alice Barden McElhone, her sister Marguerite Decker and her brother Charlie McElhone. She is survived by her brothers Felix McElhone and Ted McElhone, her children James Munn, Alicia Gambrell (Cary), and Matthew Munn (Lori), and her grandchildren Robert Gambrell, Ashleigh Gambrell, Caitlin Munn, James Munn, and Jacob Munn.

A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N Fountain Hills Boulevard in Fountain Hills, followed by a reception onsite.

Evelyn will be laid to rest in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette, Calif., beside her beloved husband. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Little Sisters of the Poor.
