Phyllis D.Osterberg

Posted

Phyllis Doreen Osterberg, 96, of Fountain Hills went with the angels March 15, 2019.

Phyllis was born to Edgar Walter and Emma Mary (Steele) Merefield Dec. 21, 1922, in Fleur-de-Lys, Caerphilly County, South Wales. She attended high school at New Tredgar, Wales.

Her life led to an adventure in-wed to Dennis Becker, U.S. Military, which brought her to the U.S.A. They began in Iowa and then moved to Phoenix. Dennis sadly passed at a fairly early age, and Phyllis continued on in her career as a designer/fashion adviser in sales beginning at Hane’s of Old Town Scottsdale and retiring from Goldwater’s, Fashion Square.

Amid her career advancement she met and married Kenneth J. Osterberg, WWII Navy Veteran, on Sept. 19, 1980 in Scottsdale. They enjoyed world and local travel, often with siblings and their spouses, and sharing time with friends and family. They shared many happy years in retirement together, residing in Fountain Hills; the pair was virtually inseparable.

Phyllis had no children but has one surviving sister, Hilda Dixon, in England. She also leaves to cherish her memory one great-niece, Elizabeth Farley, and great-great-niece, Sierra Dominguez of Arizona, and many nieces, nephews, and relations across the U.K.

Ken’s son, Gary Osterberg; daughter, Allyson Byland, and many family, friends and caretakers here in the U.S. will also dearly remember Phyllis.

She was preceded in death by six of her seven siblings: Iris Lily Lewin, Ethel May Parry, Walter Edgar Merefield, Evelyn Elizabeth Barnett, Pauline Agnes Trend, and Queenie Belton. Her spouse, Kenneth passed March 27, 2016.

Phyllis was always the “Hostess with the Mostest,” enjoying entertaining friends and family, planned or not, making sure they were comfortable and satiated. Even in her end-of-days she expressed concern that she could not lay out a proper tea for a visit.

A viewing will begin at 9 a.m. and funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2019 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.

Graveside services will follow at 12:30 p.m. at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85024.
