Crime log update

Posted

Early last summer, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office discontinued a process by which The Times was able to receive and report more detailed weekly crime updates.

In the months that followed, staff and readers expressed frustration with these changes, as it prevented us from relaying little more than the time, location and type of reported incident in a timely fashion.

While we appreciate the balancing act necessary to properly disperse this type of information without forfeiting anything too sensitive, the new procedure prevented the paper from offering information Fountain Hills residents required to be better informed and, in some cases, more safe.

Over the months, Times reporter Bob Burns has reached out to local MCSO representatives and they have always been willing to accommodate our requests to the best of their ability. If you’ve been keeping up with the crime log, though, you might have noticed that many reports in recent editions of The Times have offered more details concerning prominent incidents around town.

According to Burns, that’s largely thanks to Capt. Larry Kratzer, who figured out a way to meet with Times staff on a weekly basis in order to provide more detailed information on crime reports, when appropriate. The Times is appreciative of this cooperation and looks forward to continuing to work with MCSO in order to provide more thorough information to the residents of Fountain Hills, direct from the source.
