Hike

Posted

Former editor of The Fountain Hills Times and now newly elected Councilman Mike Scharnow in his letter to the editor Nov. 21, refers his “take a hike” to the newly built Adero Canyon Trailhead; at first blush, seemingly clear.

As an editor, Mr. Scharnow is well aware of a double entendre. Now, wearing the politician’s hat, perhaps he should take note.

Normally the football expression “hike” means to pass, to now move, to carry onward. However, when used in the expression “to take a hike,” it has a negative off sense, such as “get lost.”

If Mr. Scharnow and his fellow council act by creating wealth for the town – any form of wealth – by making successful business enterprises, as the simplest capitalists would, rest assured he and the council will not hear “take a hike,” as in “get lost.”

Mayor Ginny Dickey will set a course but, Mr. Scharnow, it all depends on you and the council, what you will hear from your constituency, be it yes or no.

Of course, build the town finances by building something like roads, music festivals, trolleys, etc. However, attempt another vote on new taxes or engage in wasteful spending and assuredly you will hear a loud no, as in “take a hike,” and not on any trail leading out of a trailhead.
