Property tax

Posted

Already we are seeing negative comments about the possible primary property tax that is so desperately needed in Fountain Hills. The president’s new tax law has promised to put money back in everyone’s pocket, so why not take a little of that to help fix our roads, fountain and other infrastructure?

We can’t rely on sales tax or loony ideas to draw tourists to town. The town is like a 30-year-old house that has not been maintained. There is a hole in the roof and we are trying to decide whether we should fix it or just hope it won’t rain.

If we don’t pass a primary property tax we’ll be faced with separate bonds to repair the roads and to replace the pump equipment for the fountain. That still won’t fund upkeep for our buildings and landscaping. We are still paying off the last bond and these future bonds would never end. The cost to taxpayers is the same, except that every few years we’d go through a fight and extra costs to get the special bond on the ballot.

If you don’t trust the town leaders, then make sure you elect the right people. Consider which candidates were in favor of the lagoon idea, for instance.
