The Falcons played a split week of baseball, besting Lake Havasu before tying Northwest Christian and losing to Alhambra.

It was a mixed bag for the Falcons, moving the team to 4-4 in section play.

The boys welcomed Poston Butte to the home field Tuesday afternoon and tomorrow, March 31, they will take on the squad from Casa Grande in a 4 p.m. home outing.

Lake Havasu

The Falcons began the week on a high note, besting the visiting team from Lake Havasu by a final score of 15-5 in a run rule shortened five inning game.

Mitchell Woltkamp started out on the mound, pitching four innings for the win. Cody Phillips came in to finish.

At the plate, Andrew Hoyt went two for two with a run and three RBIs while Connor Gevirtz put in a hit, three runs and two RBIs.

Cody Phillips had a hit and two RBIS and teammate Tyler Luther-Wilson added a hit and two runs scored.

Despite the final score, Briguglio said the Falcons’ showdown against Lake Havasu was actually a close game.

“In the fourth inning, it was a 7-5 game,” he said.

“Then we scored four in the fourth inning and added another four in the fifth, so it really was a close game. We just exploded there at the end.”

Northwest

Next up was a home game against Northwest Christian on March 24, a game that ended in unusual fashion.

“We ended up playing nine innings with a 10-10 tie,” Briguglio said.

“So it was a suspended game, because it got too dark to play. I don’t think we’ve ever had that happen before.”

Being a powerpoint game, the Falcons and Northwest will eventually have to meet and settle the score. For now, though, it stands as a tie.

“They were up 5-0, and then we came back and tied it,” Briguglio said.

“Then we went up 10-8 and then they came back and tied it, so it was a real seesaw of a game.”

Alhambra

Game three on the week, however, saw the Falcons unable to keep up with the competition, falling behind 14-4 against Alhambra at home.

“That was the first game of the year that we really got beat,” Briguglio said.

“Our other losses, there was a critical error here or there where we really hurt ourselves. In this game, we just got flat beat.”

Briguglio said Alhambra had a powerful pitcher whereas the Falcons are discovering that their pitching depth for three games in a single week isn’t quite up to snuff.

“It’s a challenge,” he added.

“We just ran out of gas, so to speak.”

At the plate, Tyler Luther-Wilson went two for three with a run while Tiger Horikawa went two for four with a run. Matt Woltkamp also added in a hit and an RBI.

“We’ve got to regroup,” Briguglio added.

“We’re 4-4 in powerpoint games, so we’ve got our work cut out for us. Our goal is to grind through it and get better every day.”
