Gay: Councilman Skillicorn acts with disdain toward town staff

Before you complain that Councilman Skillicorn was treated “unfairly” by his councilmates, let’s look at his behavior ahead of and even after the censure and sanctions. The facts are clear that Councilman Skillicorn has demonstrated continual harassment of town staff. 

There is a very good reason the recent censure of Skillicorn included the following provision: any time he meets with staff going forward, at least one other staff member must be present. Let. That. Sink. In.

That provision didn’t come out of thin air. It was meant to protect town staff from potential harassment by Councilmember Skillicorn. Again, just let that sink in.

At least seven documented different instances clearly demonstrate that the councilman acts with disdain toward staff for which he has now been held accountable. Here’s a short list to consider (and there’s more):

*Disparaging remarks to the Economic Development director during a presentation.

*Threats by accusing staff of “rolled eyes.”

*Accusations that an expenditure be taken from the Manager salary instead.

*Confrontation with code enforcement officer over illegal sign placement.

*Accusations that the town clerk intentionally misled residents regarding Target referendum process.

*Has made disparaging remarks on social media concerning staff.

*Most recently, accusations regarding staff to media about his censure/sanctions.

 These questions remain concerning Councilman Skillicorn:

*Will he continue with this kind of behavior?

*Will he continue to block residents on his social media accounts when discussing town issues?

*Will staff be reticent to work with him (even with a mandatory second town staffer present) after this continued erratic behavior?

*Will his supporters still back him based upon these behaviors?
