Ronca: Social media is not good government

Posted

In Fountain Hills some of our elected leaders believe that good government is best conducted on social media.

Some “leaders” post claims of successes, complaints or conduct polls to “assess” the temperature of the public that they are elected to serve. It’s not official. It’s not valid. But it is fashionably groupie.

Although clubs and organizations may find social media a great way to correspond with members and potential members, for government – be it local, state or federal – social media is not an effective way to conduct official business. Social media encourages people to say things they won’t say in person, spread false information – much by inuendo – when ascribing something to someone, or posting caricatures or re-imaged photos. Are they trying to lead readers to believe it’s official business?

Social media is not good government.

And to top it off, many of these same “leaders” manage their social media by only accepting responses to their point of view by eliminating, blocking or dissuading others from responding if they have a different opinion. If they are using social media in their role as an elected leader, they may be breaking the law when they block others, but they don’t care.

And yes, it’s happening right here in Fountain Hills. It’s embarrassing. Persuading you through doctored images, opportunistic photo-ops and messaging which is misleading and often used just to self-promote themselves to people outside of our town, has nothing to do with responsible representation of Fountain Hills residents.

Elect leaders based on what they have done, not by what they present on social media. Look at their experience, expertise and performance; not at what they hope to personally gain. It’s important. We’ve already seen too much voter remorse. Let’s not repeat it.
