While many worry about what sort of trouble youths might be getting into, some of those teens are doing their part to let their peers know how dangerous some activities can be.
Recently, the Mesa Prevention Alliance held a Valley-wide contest for youths to design a logo for its “Get Real Now” campaign, designed to encourage local teens to stay away from drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
Fountain Hills High School student Audrey Groux decided to try her artistic hand at designing the logo, taking first place and winning an iPod Touch in the process.
“My mom told me about the competition because she knows I like to draw,” Groux said.
Groux said she became interested in the project, and began brainstorming possible logo designs.
“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do at first,” Groux said. “So I kept drawing random things.”
Groux did know she wanted to incorporate more than one “substance” in her design, and eventually came up with a crossed cigarette and beer bottle framed in a circle of smoke.
“Once I knew what I wanted to do, it took me an hour or two to design it and probably another hour to draw and color it,” Groux said.
As for the message her artwork provides, Groux says it’s a simple one.
“For teens to stay away from that stuff,” Groux said. “First of all, it’s illegal. Secondly, it’s bad for you. Our minds are still developing as teens, and all drugs and alcohol do is damage it.”
When she found out she won, Groux said she was really excited.
“I haven’t really won anything before, so it was nice,” Groux said. “I’m just glad I got the chance to do this.”
Groux’s logo will be used as part of the Get Real Now campaign and featured on its myspace page online at myspace.com/get_real_now.
