A little more of this and a little more of that

Anyone who knows me knows that I have absolutely no problem going on and on about, well, pretty much anything.

That’s why I was a bit shocked this week when I sat down to write my column and came face to face with a severe case of writer’s block.

After a few minutes, I realized that it wasn’t because I didn’t have anything to talk about, but rather that there was too much going on to focus on just one thing.

Our publisher, Alan, claimed the title “A little of this and a little of that” for his column a long time ago, but I don’t think he’ll mind me borrowing the concept for this week’s rundown.

-------

First off, how about that Great Fair? As I said last week, my Mom was visiting from Parker and we spent Saturday walking all over downtown Fountain Hills admiring all of the arts and crafts on display. She even snagged a couple of trinkets to take home with her.

We had a great day and she got to see my hometown at its best, so thanks to everyone who helped make it a special weekend.

-------

Secondly, the high school band has outdone itself once again. As director Lynn Truby points out in the Schools section this week, having even a single musician represent your school in the Region Honor Band is a huge honor, and the mighty Flock of Falcon fury this year had a whopping five students named to those ranks. Congratulations to those FHHS students and good luck on making it to the State level.

-------

If you thought things would be slowing down this weekend, think again.

Fountain Hills is one of the host sites for the 2016 Memorial Championship Disc Golf Tournament, which will once again bring hundreds of athletes and thousands of visitors from all over the country.

This annual event is always a big draw for the community, so expect heavier traffic around town this week and keep an extra sharp eye out for pedestrians around Fountain Park.

Festivities are ongoing throughout the week, but things will get especially busy between now and Sunday.

If you’ve never taken the time to find out what all of this disc golf business is about, the public is always invited to swing by and check out some of these top players in action.

-------

And that’s merely the beginning, folks. News reporter Bob Burns recently informed me that we’ve got somewhere around 17 community events scheduled for March alone, which means Fountain Hills is going to be buzzing with activity through the next four weeks.

Just a sampling of what’s to come includes the Mountain to Fountain 5K and 15K event on March 6, the Fine Arts and Wine Affaire from March 11-13, the Kite Festival on March 12, two St. Patrick’s Day events, the Music Festival on March 19, the Eggstravaganza on March 26 and more.

It’s a good thing we resurfaced all of those streets, because they’re about to get a real workout.
