A little of this and a little of that

I can’t believe it’s December already. We attended the Stroll in the Glow activities last Saturday night to get us in the holiday mood.

Diane and I returned from our latest visit to Henderson, Nev., the day before Thanksgiving.

That was in time to see the annual Parada de los Cerros and have turkey dinner at my son, Brent’s, house. This is one of the few years I wasn’t in the parade. I still think this is one of the best family events held in our community. That’s real home-town stuff.

People have been curious about how I’m doing now that I’m retired. They don’t see me as much now that we are doing a lot of traveling these days.

My Parkinson’s Disease seems to be holding its own. I have fallen three times this year, but I have not suffered any major injuries. I’m walking more slowly and always use my walking sticks or a walker to get around and prevent additional falls. As Diane tells me, “Falling is not an option.”

As for the rest of retirement, I guess the worst thing for me is remembering what day it is. After 44 years of appointments and deadlines, I am constantly asking Diane what day it is.

I keep hearing from people when I am in Fountain Hills, asking, “why Las Vegas?”

Well, first off, we sold our house in Fountain Hills a year ago last September and rented places here and in the Green Valley area of Henderson, Nev.

Diane has relatives who live there and we enjoy visiting with them.

But the real reason is we want to see and be a part of our grandson, Camden’s, life. He’ll be five years old in February.

We want to watch him get a hit in a little league game or help him build a spaceship with Legos on our living room floor. We’ve missed out doing those sorts of things on a consistent basis with the New Jersey and California grandkids.

Camden would rather be with us than a babysitter. That‘s how it all came about.

Henderson is growing by leaps and bounds. Construction is underway on the Oakland Raiders headquarters and practice field. That facility will employ 250 people. The NFL franchise will begin play as soon as 2019.

Google announced on the Friday before we left that it would be building a $600 million data center in Henderson. The company said it would bring in $94 million in tax revenue to Nevada over the next 20 years and hire 50 employees within the next five years at an average salary of $65,000.

Costco opened its second store in Henderson while we were there the last time. The city on the south side of Las Vegas is now the second largest municipality in terms of population in the state.

We want to congratulate the winners of our recent town election, Mayor Ginny Dickey and council members Michael Scharnow, David Spelich and Alan Magazine. As you know, Michael was The Times’ editor for 14 years and employed here for more than 30 years. He will make a fine addition to the council.
