Here we are at the beginning of September, and before you know it, we’ll be seeing Christmas items in stores. Where does the time go?
I’m sure my mom has said that a time or two in her 90 years. No, if today is Sept. 6, make that 91. Happy Birthday, Mom! We’ll celebrate on Saturday night.

One other good thing about September is the temperatures usually start showing signs of cooling off. I used to be one of those who loved the summer heat in Arizona.
I worked five summers as a lifeguard during and immediately after college at Sunnyslope Pool in North Phoenix. We got a cup of water every half hour to stay hydrated. I don’t think that was enough now that I think back about it.
But now this 70-year-old body can’t take the heat. It’s been that way ever since my Deep Brain Stimulation surgery in 2011.

Another good thing about September is that the end of the month signifies the end of Monsoon season. The Monsoon is good because of the rain it brings.
But what is not good is that it can bring storms that do major damage to a small area in a short amount of time. Such was the case when the clubhouse at Desert Canyon Golf Course sustained heavy damage on July 16. Winds were clocked at 60 miles per hour.
The course and restaurant have remained closed since then for renovation. Tim Sciutto, enterprising operator of the DC Bar and Grill, has offered curbside, drive-up service the past two Friday nights to continue his commitment to service the Fountain Hills community.

Rainfall totals for August in Fountain Hills included .30 on August 3, .50 on August 12, .02 on August 13 and .05 on August 23 for a total of .87 inches for the month. Lowest minimum in August was 72 on the 16th. It was a tie for the highest maximum with a 107 on the 10th and 27th.

I’m sure you know someone or you have relatives affected by the flooding from the record rainfall produced by Hurricane Harvey in east Texas last week.
My daughter Holly’s in-laws, Dick and Gail Ireland, have lived in Kingwood, a master-planned community in north Houston, for 45 years.
They moved into a smaller house in that same development in 1995 after the kids had moved out.
Through all those years they were never threatened by a flood. But one night last week they were returning home, after being gone for two hours, to find their home under seven feet
of water.
The San Jacinto River had overflowed its banks far greater than expected.
They lost everything except for some china dishes and some bottles of wine. Two cars they had parked in the garage are also total losses.
“To lose everything when you’re 80 is hard to take,” said Bruce, Holly’s husband. “But at least they were gone when the flood came through. Things could have been worse for them.”

The 20th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana was remembered last week.
On one show they said, it was one of those events where you remember where you were when you heard the news.
We were in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with friends Frank and Janie Kainrath. I had proposed to Diane on the beach the night before.
We woke up the next morning to hear the awful news on the TV.
