You can almost hear the crack of the bat.

Pitchers and catchers report today at the training sites of the Diamondbacks, Giants, Indians and Rockies, and to the majority of the remaining Major League teams tomorrow.

Now that the football season is over, and it’s not quite March Madness time for college basketball’s annual tournament, we turn our attention to Spring Training. The games begin on March 1.

Since this is an even-numbered year, 2016, you know the Giants will be in the thick of the season race. They won the World Series in 2010, 2012 and 2014. But they should be challenged by the Arizona Diamondbacks. They made some interesting signings over the winter months.

Don’t forget to watch for the Play Ball! edition which will be mailed to every household in Fountain Hills it will also be in The Times next week. It will also be available on newsstands in Fountain Hills. You can read about information on the Fountain Hills Little League, the schedules of both the Fountain Hills High School varsity baseball and softball teams and information about the co-ed softball league offered by the town in the summer months.

Congratulations to the Fountain Hills High School girls soccer team who came home from the state tournament with the title and a first place trophy.

And congratulations are also in order for the girls softball team at Fountain Hills Middle School . They finished in first place in their league and undefeated for the season.

The high on Thursday is expected to be above the 90–degree mark. If so, it would be the earliest date in recorded history that the thermometer rose above the 90-degree mark.

The average date for the first 90-degree day is April 3 and the current record for the earliest date is Feb. 24. If it makes it to 90 tomorrow it will beat that record by six days!

You can’t say there’s nothing or little to do in Fountain Hills lately. Last weekend, we had the Concours d’Elegance in the park on Saturday. The charity car show had over 500 cars on display and attendance was estimated to be between 10,000 and 15,000.

More than 350 couples took part in the “Love in the Hills” event on Sunday, also at Fountain Park.

This weekend is the Jerry and Jackie Miles Tribute dinner event at the Community Center on Saturday night, Feb. 20, with nearly 200 in attendance.

Then, the next weekend is the Great Fair with some 500 artists and a large crowd expected for that.

The weekend after that is the big fund-raiser for the Fountain Hills Theater on Sunday, March 6. That event starts at 5:30 p.m. It has a beach party theme and should be a lot of fun.

Then, last week, I got a call from Jeff Dayton. He was calling from his home in Nashville to tell me that he is scheduled to be in Fountain Hills for a return performance, also on March 6, of the Glen Campbell Tribute Show that he performed here last year. Jeff was the lead guitarist and musical director for Campbell’s touring group for 15 years after leaving Fountain Hills.

He is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
