A little of this and a little of that

It’s quiet once again at our house, as little grandson Camden has gone home. Or maybe I should say his toys have gone home.

He doesn’t cry or make a lot disturbing sounds himself, but his toys were starting to get to me. One day at the office I wondered why l had the song “Oh Susanna” on my mind all day. That evening as I was watching television, I could hear a voice squawking the words to “Oh Susanna.”

Then there was the walker that had car sounds recorded on it. It had turn signals (tick tock, tick tock.) a loud horn and engine revving sounds. But the most disturbing sound was this clacking sound that he loved to make by running a little car back and forth across a series of pointed bumps.

As I said, Camden didn’t make many sounds himself, except for the last two nights he was here. Turns out he was cutting three new teeth that were coming in.

Poor little guy. He was probably miserable.

Do you remember my column from a couple of weeks ago where my former neighbor brought me a copy of The Arizona Republic that 1 with the headline, “Nixon Resigns.”

Well I was visited last week by a 22-year resident of Fountain Hills, Jack Holmes.

He was an investment advisor who lived in southern California before retiring here.

He was kind enough to bring me a copy of the Los Angeles Times – Orange County edition that came out on the day of the first moon landing by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Unlike The Arizona Republic, The L.A. Times had several other stories on the front page totally unrelated to the moon landing. There was a reason for that. They were legitimate new stories. I had forgotten that that the big scandal involving Sen. Ted Kennedy and the death of a former secretary, Mary Jo Kopechne, took place on the same day.

Another story carried a story with a headline, “Nixon Will Outline Welfare, Tax Plans.”

I’d like to get both historic editions framed and displayed with other significant editions of the Fountain Hills Times inside our office.

Diane and I drove daughter Toni and grandson Camden back home on Saturday to Las Vegas.

We’ve taken this drive three times since Christmas, and I‘m sure we will be traveling there quite regularly.

Because we are driving that route so often, we paid particular attention to a story we heard on a local newscast Super Bowl weekend.

We heard that two people were killed in a head-on accident involving two cars on Highway 93 near Wikiep on that Thursday.

Diane greatly dislikes that highway. Sections of it are two lanes, one in each direction, with a speed limit of 65 miles per hour.

Ironically, the woman wh osoosse vehicle was hit head-on b;y a man who crossed ove frhte cener lane at the wrong time was Let’s Go Editor Linda Mc Thrall’s next door neighbor.

She was had recently retired and was driving to Las Vegas to visit her daughters.
