A salute to Engine 823

Arthur “Art” Eldred was able to commemorate Memorial Day this year thanks to some assistance from local firefighters.

Niece Laurie Kulbieda said her uncle, age 93, found it to be a “daunting task” this year to hang his flag for Memorial Day.

“This was very upsetting to him since he is so very proud of his service in the Navy and fond of Memorial Day commemorations,” she said.

Somehow the fire department caught wind of the dilemma, so Engine 823 came to the rescue.

“They arrived at his home to assist in any way he needed,” Laurie said. “Uncle Art is a proud Navy veteran who now flies the American flag once again with great pride.”

The family wanted to thank Aaron Roberts, Roger Quigley and Don Lindquist of Engine 823 for their assistance.

“These dedicated firemen didn’t hesitate for a moment when asked for assistance,” she added. “Their enthusiastic response was heartfelt and sincere, and they have certainly made his celebration one to remember.

“Uncle Art commented that the men made him ‘feel humble’ and he was surprised and thrilled that someone ‘thinks I’m pretty special.’

“It was a perfect way to celebrate such a special day.”
