Dig deep to learn more about the Four Peaks Amethyst Mine in a presentation hosted by the Fountain Hills Activity Center Thursday, April 6, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Community Center.
Douglas Hill, Certified Master Horologist with Sami Fine Jewelry, has been going to the amethyst mine the past seven years via helicopter. Once at the mine, it’s like being in a geode, as the amethyst sticks out of the mine walls, according to Hill.
All amethyst digging is done by hand using a small hammer and screwdriver to pry out the amethyst. Learn about the mine’s history from the late 1700s to current times; why it is considered the only precious amethyst in the world and so rare; why it’s in five countries as Crown Jewels; how and where it is cut into beautiful jewelry; how the miners work and stay at the mine.

It is one of the most remote mines in the United States. Participants will take home a handout with full details on the mine. Helicopter tours are available of the mine. Learn what you can expect to see and do and take home with you if you plan to tour the mine.
Hill has become the local expert on the Amethyst Mine at Four Peaks. By trade, Douglas is a Master Horologist; more simply a watch maker at Sami’s Fine Jewelry. He has been with Sami’s approximately 14 years and has a wealth of information to share.
