Anniversary adventures on the road

How can you not be happy at the happiest place on earth?
You can’t.
At least most of the time.
That is, if you don’t mind long lines, long waits, expensive food, throngs of people and tons of crying babies…and even a few closed rides.
Other than that, Disneyland Park is indeed the happiest place on earth.
But for a love-struck couple celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary, Disneyland was the perfect place to start a small vacation and get away from work for a while.
Of course, we had agreed about seven years ago we’d return to Jamaica to celebrate this particular anniversary, but sometimes plans go awry and other arrangements just have to be made…
But don’t you think a small cruise through “Small World” would be the equivalent of hanging out at an all-inclusive beach resort in Jamaica?
We’ll never know, because the well-known ride was shut down that particular day. As my mom would say, must be that “Scharnow luck.” The “Indiana Jones” ride is undergoing renovation and likely to be opened before summer starts. The “Finding Nemo” submarine ride is drained and fenced and who knows when to resurface…
But it is still a fun and popular destination, is it not? Some people are rather obsessed with the park and make numerous pilgrimages to the famed Mickey Mouse shrine. I don’t get it, but Disney magic certainly continues to make its mark around the globe.
It all started in Anaheim, of course, so there is plenty of history and film footage to document the park’s transformation over the decades.
I first visited the park in the early 1960s, but other than a few pictures, I don’t seem to recall the trip. Our last visit was about nine years ago, two boys in tow with us who also had a great time. It also was everyone’s first visit to California Adventure Park. Memories indeed. Disneyland discriminates against no one – all have equal opportunity to be happy (or not).
Lest you all think my idea of romance and anniversary celebrations revolve around a Magic Castle, think again.
Our trip also included a stay for several days at a Huntington Beach resort, giving us time to recover from the happiest place on earth and nurse my big toe blister.
The biggest adventure of all, however, involved the Harley Davidson. That’s right, we braved the winds, L.A. area traffic and I-10 on the motorcycle, packing leather along with the bathing suits.
You can’t get much closer and romantic than riding together back-to-back on a bike.
We ended up putting nearly 950 miles on the bike – and we learned a lot about traveling in that manner and what we’re capable of during such a trip. It can be tough – but well worth it. Kind of like marriage.
We also learned it’s been a great 10 years and wouldn’t trade it for anything in this world. Plenty of adventures still await…
