Arts at Ascension is planning a “twofer” Friday, Jan. 13.
Featured first is the return of Patrick Sheridan, tuba virtuoso and raconteur. The second is the presentation of the fresh, new Concerto for Tuba by Juno award-winning composer, Rob Teehan.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. at Fountain Hills Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.
Sheridan is back by popular demand. When he appeared last season, the Arts at Ascension audience expressed amazement at the variety and richness of tuba selections. And throughout his performance, Sheridan told humorous stories of life-as-tuba-player.
Sheridan is one of the most celebrated tuba soloists in the instrument's history. He has performed more than 3,000 concerts, in over 50 countries, in venues ranging from the White House to NBA half-time shows to the Hollywood Bowl. He has been featured in television and radio broadcasts on four continents, including appearances most recently on NBC's Today Show and on NPR.
Beyond his busy performing life, Sheridan's commitment to education is extensive. His wind students occupy principal positions in major international ensembles. He has served on the music faculties of universities and conservatories and he has frequently been guest conductor of both ensemble and orchestra.
Accompanying Sheridan on the piano will be Charles Szczepanek, artistic director of Arts at Ascension, composer, and owner of Winding Road Studios. Sheridan and Szczepanek tour throughout the United States. Their collaborations this season include the world premiere of Concerto for Tuba by Rob Teehan, the Canadian composer.
The Jan. 13 performance will be held at Church of the Ascension. There are still $15 per person general admission tickets available. All proceeds from ticket sales benefit the music program at St. Matthew's Catholic School. Last season Arts at Ascension raised more than $16,000 for the central Phoenix school. Tickets can be purchased securely at artsatascension.org.
