Church of the Ascension artistic director Charles Szczepanek has assembled a variety of musicians for the 2018-19 concert season beginning Nov. 9 and ending March 6, 2019.

Net proceeds from the “Arts at Ascension” concerts will again be donated to the fine arts department at St. Matthew School, an inner-city Phoenix Catholic K-8 school that provides dual language instruction.

Since 2014, Arts at Ascension has raised more than $60,000 in support of the fine arts education there.

All concerts will begin at 7 p.m. in Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.

Season subscriptions and individuals tickets are available. Prices are $80 per person for priority seating for the season or $65 for general seating. Single general priority seating is $30 per person or general admission is $25.

Tickets can be purchased online at artsatascension.org, in person or by phone at the church, 480-837-1066.

Sharing the Nov. 9 opening night concert will be Michael Kocour, a pianist and Arizona State University faculty member, and “his friends,” Julie Wood, tenor sax and vocals; Ben Hedquist, bass; Jeff Libman, guitar, and Dom Moio, drums.

Bandoneonist Danilo Cernotto from Santa Fe, Argentina, will join guitarists Miguel Piva and Chris Dorsey, musicians with the Sante Fe Guitar Quartet, for the second concert on Jan. 17.

Their repertoire of duos and trios will feature traditional and modern tangos, along with works by contemporary composers Celso Machado of Brazil and American Ralph Towner.

Double bassist Catalin Rotaru, accompanied by Wan Ting Yu, will spotlight the Feb. 8 concert.

Rotaru performs on a modern instrument made in Italy. He has travelled extensively in the United States, Asia, Europe and South America to perform.

“Charles and Friends” will be the theme of the final presentation, March 8.

Szczepanek said he will perform with eight or 10 guest artists who have not yet been selected. They will be a mix of local and national vocalists and instrumentalists, said Szczepanek.
