Atrocities

There is something wrong with our society and, specifically, our schools when the general response to atrocities of the type committed against Notre Dame Prep by Desert Mountain High School students is passivity and the reaction of school officials is the typical cop out that “we’re investigating.”

News coverage referred to the incidents before and during their football game as “pranks.” I used to accept such descriptions as a forgiving and “Christian” way of looking at the insulting or prejudiced actions of adolescent fools. Nowadays, I can’t look at these incidents so tolerantly. Tolerance seems to have evolved to mean indulgence and, personally, I’m sick of the indulgence and tolerance that we are expected to grant every wrongdoer for every violation of personal responsibility.

The desecration of Notre Dame’s statue of Mary, the mother of Christ, with a provocatively placed sex toy and the leading of cheers and taunts by some juvenile psychopath dressed as Jesus is not a prank.

The desecration of Notre Dame’s statue of Mary, the mother of Christ, with a provocatively placed sex toy and the leading of cheers and taunts by some juvenile psychopath dressed as Jesus is not a prank.

The dancing with the contrived Christ by yet another simpleton dressed as the devil is not a prank. Filling the stadium air with mockery of Christianity is definitely not a prank. It is, however, yet another relentless example of society’s downward spiral.

I think that we who are offended should demand equal treatment to the currently accepted standards accorded to every other victim of intolerance: a public apology to Notre Dame and all Christians from both malefactors and their principal; a safe space for Christians on DMH’s campus and sporting venues; suspension of the offending perverts; termination of the principal if she fails to comply with these demands.

In the meantime, I will pray for the world’s idiots and that Notre Dame continues, as they did that day, to pummel Desert Mountain in football.
