Auto dealer plan approved

Fountain Hills may soon have a new auto sales dealership along Saguaro Boulevard.

The Planning and Zoning Commission May 9 approved a concept plan for J&D Premier Auto Sales at 11881 Saguaro.

The business will use two of four suites in an existing plaza and will display vehicles along the curb to the frontage road.

There are stipulations to the plan approval: an occupancy permit will not be issued until site improvements are complete; conditions of an encroachment permit to allow vehicle display to use a portion of the rights-of-way must be complied with; applicant must take necessary steps to protect a water line backflow preventer from potential damage as a result of the business operations.

Commissioner Richard Turner asked business owner Stan Fuller whether he had anticipated doing anything to improve landscaping on the site.

Fuller noted that he is not the property owner and there is pavement all the way to the curb. However, he said he and his son, who will operate the business, had considered using two large pots on the site for planting.

“We are looking forward to being part of the community,” Fuller said. “We are a clean, friendly business and would ask you to approve this so we can get under way.”

Fuller said they currently have a business in Mesa that they are vacating and relocating to Fountain Hills.

“We would like to move in sometime soon after June 1,” Fuller said.

Fuller and his sons own and operate new car dealerships in Show Low, and he previously had a used car business in Fountain Hills. He left in 1996.

The commission voted 6-1 to approve the plan with the additional stipulation to add some landscape element.

Gene Slechta cast the dissenting vote. He had proposed an alternative plan for displaying the vehicles in front of the business, which was rejected.
