Posted

Barbara Ann McKean Wyman, 83, passed away on April 27, 2013 at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital in Scottsdale.

She was born on May 28, 1929 in El Paso, Texas to John Morgan McKean and Hattie Patterson McKean.

Barbara grew up in Glendale, Calif., graduated from Hoover High School there in 1947 and attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., receiving a bachelor of arts in music.

She played music professionally and was a beloved church choir director for many years.

Barbara met the love of her life, John (Buz) Wyman in 1949 while visiting his roommate, her cousin “Buddy,” during June Week at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Following graduation from Annapolis and Stanford, the two were married in Glendale in 1951, with her cousin serving as best man.

Happily wedded for almost 62 years, Barb has experienced life as a military wife, companion during national and foreign assignments, and as an officer in a family corporation. Wherever situated, Barb established, cherished and sustained close friends.

Contentedly settled in Fountain Hills following a three-year residence in Europe, Barb was a member of several clubs and organizations, serving many years as the principal docent for the local museum, promoting and directing an annual “Munch & Music” program at the Community Center; and acting in a number of community musical theater performances.

As a student of languages and history, her lifelong thirst for learning never dimmed.

Barbara is survived by her husband, John of Fountain Hills; her children, Sue (Vic) of Los Angeles, Calif., Leila (Mike) of Nevada City, Calif., Dan (Kathy) of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Bruce (Catherine) of Phoenix; her grandchildren, Gabe (Cheri), Jesse, Amy, Zack, Mary, Cory, and Charlie; her great-grandchildren Andrew, Keira, and Kai; her brother, John “Pat” McKean and her niece, Marianne (John) McNair; and many other relatives.

A memorial service will be held at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. A reception will follow in the church hall. The ashes will be interred in El Paso, Texas this fall.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.

The Wyman family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of the ICU at Scottsdale Memorial Healthcare. The compassionate attention they provided Barbara and the comfort accorded the family will forever be remembered.
