Baseball earns section title early, prepares for state
The high school baseball team added another pair of wins to the season total last week, besting teams from Scottsdale Christian Academy and Camp Verde to claim the section title with two games left to go in the regular season.
“This is our 10th section title overall, so that’s pretty exciting,” said head coach Mike Briguglio.
“We’ve still got two games left, but only one is a section game and we’re two games ahead, so we clinched it early this year.”

Now in possession of another title and gearing up for the state playoffs, Briguglio said the Falcons will use this week’s games to get ready for the big show.
The team hosted Florence Tuesday afternoon, April 28, and will be on the road for the final game of the regular season this afternoon, April 29, to play Chino Valley at 4 p.m.
Scottsdale
The Falcons began their week against Scottsdale Christian, going on to claim a close 5-2 victory on the back of some clutch hitting.
Devin Foyle pitched the full outing, giving up three hits, two unearned runs and striking out 10 in the process.
Offensively, Cory Kukkola had two hits while Andy Szwiec put in two hits and an RBI. Connor Gevirtz had two hits, a run and an RBI.
Briguglio said the big moment came from Devin Foyle, who stepped up to the plate in the fifth inning. At that moment, the game was tied 1-1.
“We had runners at first and third with two outs,” Briguglio said.
“It was just one of those moments. It was a 2-2 count and I thought to myself, great players make great plays at great moments.”
And that’s exactly what happened.
The next pitch was a curveball, which Foyle sent out of the park.
“It was a huge win that earned us the championship,” Briguglio said.
“The guys were really excited after the game. It’s another banner on the wall, which they see every day and it reminds them. It’s great motivation.”
Camp Verde
Despite having the section title firmly in hand, the Falcons refused to slack off during the following evening’s game, a home match-up versus Camp Verde.
“We scored five in the first and seven in the second,” Briguglio said.
“We ended up winning 12-0 in five so, yes, the boys were very focused.”
Matt Woltkamp started on the mound, pitching three, with Andy Szwiec coming in to finish. The team backed up those scoreless performances with no errors.
At the plate, Briguglio said the offensive drive was spread out nicely, with multiple players earning hits, runs and RBIs.
“We had 11 hits by eight different guys,” Briguglio added.
