Baseball earns two wins

After a trio of tough losses, the Fountain Hills High School baseball team won two hard-fought battles last week.

The Falcons’ first game last week was on March 26 against Coronado. FHHS won the game 7-4.

Fountain Hills next played on March 28, this time facing Gilbert Christian and earning a 7-6 victory.

The Falcons play three games this week, two at home and one away.

The two home games were Monday, April 1, and Tuesday, April 2. On Monday the Falcons played a rematch against Coronado and on Tuesday FHHS played American Leadership Academy Gilbert.

Today, Wednesday, April 3, the Falcons are traveling to Tucson for a game against Pusch Ridge Christian Academy starting at 4 p.m.

Coronado

Head coach Joe Merklin said he was impressed with the character his team showed, battling back after losing the lead in a game against Coronado.

“We jumped out with four runs for an early lead,” Merklin said. “Then they (Coronado) tied the game and we went into the seventh inning, 4-4.”

Falcon Hayden Adams hit a triple to drive one run in and then Hunter McAloon hit a double to bring in two more runs to earn the 7-4 victory.

Jackson Coup closed the game on the mound for the Falcons, after Hunter Reed pitched five innings.

Gilbert Christian

The Falcons’ game against Gilbert Christian was “back and forth,” as Merklin puts it.

The Falcons were able to get a runner across the plate in the first inning only to have Gilbert do the same.

In the third both teams scored two more runs but Fountain Hills fell behind when they scored only one run in the fourth to Gilbert’s three.

However, the fourth would be the last inning Gilbert Christin would score and FHHS put up three more runs with big hits from Shane Davenport and Elijah Vargas to move ahead and claim the win.

Just like the Coronado game, Merklin said he was impressed with the resilience his team showed.

“It seems like anytime the guys get down in a game, it doesn’t bother them at all,” Merklin said. “They don’t get down on themselves, they just battle back.”

Merklin is hoping that these two wins will help boost the confidence of the team as the Falcons take on more region opponents.
