Fountain Hills is also hosting a tournament this weekend, March 1-2, at Fountain Hills Middle School. The Falcons will play Horizon Honors on March 1 at 10 a.m. and then St. Johns at 2 p.m.

On March 2 the Falcons play Desert Christian at 10 a.m. and Parker at 2 p.m.

Head coach Joe Merklin said he was happy with his team’s first regular season showing.

“Overall, it wasn’t bad for the first game,” Merklin said. “Now we just need to keep getting better.”

One area that Merklin felt FHHS lagged in was the team’s offense. The Falcons had a total of seven hits at the plate, with three of them coming from senior Elijah Vargas.

“We could have gotten our bats moving a little more,” Merklin said. “We scored our four in the fourth when Elijah Vargas hit a triple to drive two in. He was then knocked in by Hunter Reed. After that, we weren’t able to make much happen.”

Along with an R.B.I, Reed also impressed Merklin at the mound where he “pitched well” with four strikeouts.

After a false start last week, Merklin is ready to get the season going with 11 games in 14 days.
