Basketball, fair and family visits

It looks the Fountain Hills High School athletics teams are trying to make a regular occurrence out of this whole “state championship” thing.

The boys basketball squad brought home FHHS’ third state title of the school year, earning another trophy to the case in the “Hall of Champions” following a 55-48 victory over the team from Winslow.

After receiving a bye through the first round of state play, the local boys bested Snowflake and Florence in the early goings before toppling Northwest Christian in the semifinals. On Saturday night, Feb. 25, they managed to cap off the season with a 3A title.

With their trophy set to join volleyball and girls soccer for the 2016-17 academic year, I’d say that’s a pretty solid collection for a single year’s worth of athletic accolades.

Then again, as you’ll see in this week’s sports section, we’ve still got the entire spring season ahead of us. So maybe another state title or two can’t hurt, right?

With the winter crew wrapping things up, it’s now time for the baseball, softball, sand volleyball, golf, track and tennis teams to kick it into high gear, with games and matches set to fill our afternoons through the remainder of the school year.

I’m more than happy to write these congratulatory columns on a regular basis, so I invite any of those flocks of Falcons to take me up on the offer.

And speaking of congratulations, we extend a heaping helping of it to the boys basketball team. You guys did a great job and we look forward to seeing that success continue in the coming years.

I had an especially busy weekend, complete with a visit from my mom.

Just like last year, her trip from Parker coincided with the Great Fair so, of course, we made a day out of strolling up and down the Avenue while taking in all of the sights and sounds.

This was my mom’s first visit to the new place, so of course she had to spoil me with some new art for the wall and a bunch of pillows for the couch.

Then, on Sunday, we had even more visitors as my good friend Jeremy and his son came out to join us in The Hills.

Jeremy and I had that teenage friendship where we basically became part of each other’s families. My mom was always Mrs. B. to him, so it was great to get us all together in one place for a good old-fashioned session of catch-up.

Aiden, Jeremy’s son, is just about the nicest young man you’ll ever meet. He likes video games, too, so I was excited to strap a virtual reality headset to his noggin and watch as he experienced something totally new. My own child, Aria the cat, doesn’t appreciate video games, so I think I was having just as much fun watching Aiden play the games as he was having actually playing them.

So yes, it was a very busy weekend. But also a very good one.
