After an impressive first playoff match the Fountain Hills High School boys basketball team lost its second game in the state tournament, ending its 2018-19 run.
On Feb. 13 the Falcons played their first tournament game against Florence and won the close game by a final score of 65-62.
The next game in the playoffs for the Falcons was on Feb. 16 against Sabino. This time FHHS lost the game, 75-52.
Head coach Jeff Bonner said he was happy with the way his team came out for its playoff debut in the game against Florence.
“Before the game, when we were studying the team (Florence), we said, ‘OK, we can get after this team,’ and that is the way the guys came out,” Bonner said. “They came out in the first quarter and stuck it to them. We ran our sets and committed to our defense.”
However, the Falcons stumbled in the second quarter.
“Going into the second quarter we had a lead,” Bonner said. “(Florence) made some adjustments and we didn’t adjust. We got the lead and then got cocky.”
After a couple of timeouts and the halftime break, the Falcons were able to refocus themselves and get back to the plan.
“It was kind of just a battle,” Bonner said. “We got back up by two points and then, like I said, it was a battle for the rest of the game.”
Coach’s comments for the game against Sabino were not available as of press time.
