While the tragedy of a child drowning can happen at any time, the summer months are a particular concern due to increased activity around swimming pools.
According to the American Red Cross, drowning is a leading cause of death for children, and the Red Cross and public safety officials know that individuals can have a big role in changing that by following some basic rules.
Ensure that all family members learn to swim to the level of basic skills of water competency. This includes getting into the water, taking a breath, stay afloat, change position, swim a distance and get out of the water.
