Bicycle Rodeo

People have been asking me – “Hey, when are going to write your first letter to the editor?!”

Here it is, but it’s one of those “feel good” letters that won’t spark a ton of retorts for weeks to come.

As president of the Noon Kiwanis Club, I wanted to let the community know about the awesome Bicycle Safety Rodeo we held this past Saturday morning coupled with a safety seat inspection event for parents with young darlings.

Those young folks who attended had a blast – dodging in and out of cones, testing their braking skills on a bicycle, going through an “intersection” with a stop sign, avoiding “vehicles,” etc.

We gave away a bike and other cycling goodies.

Besides all the Noon Kiwanians who helped out, we had a ton of community support to pull off this awesome event. Look for it to be back next year – bigger and better.

Kudos to the Fountain Hills Rural/Metro Fire Department for showing up in full force; to the McKee Branch of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (and Rotaract group) for helping with our refreshments, snacks and raffle; to the School District for use of the Four Peaks campus; to Calvary Chapel for opening its doors (and the free coffee!); to Justin Weldy and his Town Street Department for the cones and barricades; to the Parks Dept. for the chalker; and to other volunteers who pitched in.

Big thanks to Phoenix Sgt. M.D. Warren, Boyd Tong and John Stubbs for their expertise on car seats.

Super big thanks to our K-Kids and Builders, Roger Bates and his Holy Spokes Bicycling Club, to Doug Carlson of Fountain Hills Bikes and Marcia and Bernie Hoenle of Noon Kiwanis for pulling this together.

Remember to ride safely out there!
