Blum eulogizes brother by giving away bikes

After the death of his brother, Fred, in 2008, Barrie Blum created “Fred’s Bikes” to honor his sibling.

Fred was a doctor living in Durham, N.C. when he was diagnosed at age 48 with peritoneal mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

His philosophy was “Choose Life” by living each day to the fullest and reveling in life’s simple things, such as hiking, gathering for dinner with friends, landscaping and riding his bike with buddies, according to Barrie.

Copy Express owner Barrie Blum works with community organizations to identity children who would benefit from owning and enjoying their own bicycle. He takes them shopping to select a bike, a safety helmet and lock.

Barrie has partnered with Phoenix Children’s Project to operate “Fred’s Bike Challenge.”

Eligible are youngsters in first grade through eighth grade in the Phoenix Children’s Project. They must promise not to miss one day of school between Oct. 29 and Dec. 31.

“Hopefully, the children will experience the joy and simple pleasure that Fred felt and it will enrich their lives,” said Blum.

In the first year, 2010, Blum distributed seven bikes. He is on target to give away between 15 and 20 this year.

Donations can be left at his business, 16742 E. Parkview Ave., suite 2, or contacting him at HelpingKids@PhoenixChildren.org.
