Boys soccer season ends in state quarterfinals

The 2012-13 season came to a close for the boys soccer team last week in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament.

Following a 2-1 win over Seton Catholic, the Falcons exited the tourney on a 4-2 loss to Coronado.

Seton Catholic

The Falcons entered the state tournament in a first round match-up versus Seton Catholic. The local boys were seeded ninth with Seton holding down the eighth seed.

According to head coach Tony Galietti, the Falcons had some trouble building momentum early on.

“We started out in the first half very slow and were not clicking,” Galietti said.

“In the 24th minute, Seton took advantage of a defensive error and scored to go up 1-0.”

Seton held their lead heading into halftime, where Galietti said the Falcons made a few key adjustments.

“In the second half we were able to come out much stronger and took control of the match,” he added

“Six minutes into the half, Garrett Sweetland assisted Joe Ahmann, who kicked home the equalizer.”

Galietti said the Falcons had trouble converting several other opportunities throughout the rest of the half, even though the Fountain Hills squad continued to outplay Seton.

Into overtime and the first 10-minute half remained scoreless. Things all changed one minute into the second half of overtime, however, as Cody Dunham played a ball in to Devin Foyle, who slotted it home for the game-winning goal.

“We defended well the rest of the half and were able to preserve the victory,” Galietti concluded.

Coronado

After beating Seton Catholic, the Falcons went on to take on the number one seeded squad from Coronado Saturday, Feb. 2.

While the Falcons went on to lose 4-2, Galietti said the local boys played a great match.

“We opened up the game with perfect execution of our defensive game plan to match Coronado,” Galietti said.

“In the 20th minute, Coronado went up 1-0 after they scored on a corner kick with an unlucky own goal that glanced off our defender and went into the net.”

Ten minutes later, however, the Falcons equalized after Joe Ahmann headed home a free kick from Devin Foyle, going into halftime at 1-1.

Into the second half and the Falcons actually claimed a 2-1 lead after the Falcons sent the ball into Coronado’s box, where it glanced off a defender and went into their own goal, much like what happened to the Falcons earlier in the game.

As the game neared the 18-minute mark, however, Coronado managed to equalize.

Playing with renewed offensive energy, they managed to claim two more goals in quick succession before the clock finally ticked down to zero. While Coronado won 4-2, Galietti said he was happy with how his boys played one of the top teams in the state.

“I was very proud of our boys and their effort, and Coronado was a great team that was well coached,” Galietti said.

“I would like to thank all of our parents and the fans for their support, and would like to wish our seniors the best after high school.”
