The Fountain Hills High School boys volleyball team recorded its first win in team history this past week.

The Falcons’ first game of the week was on March 5 against Leading Edge Academy. FHHS won the match in three sets; 25-10, 25-8 and 25-18.

On March 7 Fountain Hills played Goldwater and lost the match in three sets; 25-11, 25-13, 25-13.

The Falcons have the week of spring break off and will return to the court on March 20 to play an away game against Mesquite.

Leading Edge

Following the match against Leading Edge, head coach Halle Harker said she was happy to see the skills that the team has been working on in practice manifest themselves into the Falcons’ first win.

“While I didn’t think our opponent was as competitive as us, it was nice to see the team do well at the things we have been focusing on in practice, like passing and serving,” she said.

Along with starting to see improvement in all areas of the game, Harker said she also believes that the win was a good confidence booster for the Falcons heading further in the season.

Goldwater

Harker described Goldwater’s volleyball team as the exact opposite of Leading Edge Academy.

“(Goldwater) is a team that has played together for a lot of years,” Harker said. “They have club players and a few who are signed to colleges already, so they really knew the game. We ended up getting outplayed and outworked.”

As with every defeat, though, there was a silver lining and a lesson to be learned.

“They guys continued to do well with their passing and serving,” Harker said. “It also showed us that we need to work more on blocking. We got killed at the net and you can’t really blame the guys when it is something they don’t know.”

That is why Harker is excited for spring break, as she will have a week free of matches where she can work more with the players at practice.

“It is going to be nice to work with the kids who can make practice on more of an individual level,” Harker said. “One of the practices, I’ll just have my four starters so it’ll be really nice to work with them on specific skills.”
