Why is criticism so easy and helpful advice so difficult?
Gary Anderson had a great opportunity to be helpful to our Fountain Hills community, but his letter in the July 24 issue of The Fountain Hills Times focused only on criticism. Most Fountain Hills residents are well aware of the fact that far too much shopping is done in Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix.

Why is criticism so easy and helpful advice so difficult?

Most Fountain Hills residents are well aware of the fact that far too much shopping is done in Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix.
Perhaps Mr. Anderson’s “multi-million dollar company” could have changed that pattern. We are also aware of the dismal business retention rate in Fountain Hills, but many factors relate to that problem.
Perhaps what bothered me most in his “sour grapes” screed was the statement about “over-regulation of businesses.” Mr. Anderson offered no specific examples of over-regulation other than a reference to “ridiculous sign ordinances.” Perhaps sign ordinances are a minor irritation, but they should not be a major factor for a “multi-million dollar company employing over 200 people.”
What were the real major factors influencing his decision to move on to the next town on his list? Does anyone know? If someone knows, how about letting the rest of us in on the “insider information.” The problem(s) can’t be fixed until we know the specific nature of each problem.
