“Broken but open.”

That’s Yvonne Wyman’s description of the showroom of Fantasia Interiors and Progressive Floor Coverings after a car crashed May 21 into the business at 12605 N. Saguaro Blvd.

Two days after the incident, owner Wyman was still tallying the damage to the store, its contents and the building. She estimated that damage would come in around $30,000.

It was the first time such an incident occurred to her business, she said. A concrete post in front of the retail store is designed to prevent such an accident. The driver avoided hitting the post.

Replacement of the front glass windows and door of the retail store will cost $11,000 to $13,000.

Wyman said her insurance would cover losses along with the building owner’s coverage and that of the 60-year-old driver who caused the accident.

Around 8:45 a.m., Amireh, showroom director for the past three years, had just opened the business and was sitting behind her granite slab desk when she heard a loud engine noise. She looked out the front window to see a car speeding toward the store.

“I knew he wasn’t stopping so I jumped up and ran to the back,” said Amireh.

“He didn’t stop or slow down at all,” she added. The vehicle slammed into the glass front of the showroom, tore off the doors and crushed the furniture.

The custom desk weighed several hundreds of pounds. The granite alone cost between $2,500 and $3,000.

The driver told the police that he was parked in a handicapped space and mistook the gasoline pedal for the break.

The driver’s red 2015 Hyundai Sonata was totaled. The driver was not injured.

Amireh’s account of the accident differs. She said the car was not parked but “was coming in too hot” and jumped two curbs before striking the business. She said deputies never interviewed her.

Among the destroyed items were window coverings, business signage for various products and interior displays.

Wyman and Amireh said they no longer are comfortable sitting near the front window.

Amireh’s biggest peeve with the town, she said, is the number of people who don’t know how to drive.

“This seems to happen quite often,” she said. “So, it’s like, you guys need to stop driving if you don’t feel confident.”
