The Cactus Fire burning along the Salt River north of Mesa and east of Fountain Hills had consumed 500 acres of riparian river bottom, according to a Friday morning update from the Southwest Coordination Center for fire and emergency operations.
The perimeter is 40 percent contained and 80 firefighting personnel remained on the scene.
Burnout operations conducted Wednesday created tall plumes of black smoke rising into view near Red Mountain. The burnouts protected the Phon D Sutton Recreation area along the river and anchored the blaze to the highway.
