Every election cycle candidate campaign signs spread across town trying to crowd out each other for attention.
For some recent elections in Fountain Hills, there has been some controversy as to what is allowed and where signs can go.
Town Development Services Director John Wesley outlined the town’s sign regulations for candidates and interested members of the public at a recent session at Town Hall. What a sign can say, either for or against a candidate, is pretty much anything goes. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that sign content cannot be regulated due to the First Amendment right of free speech. There is some allowance for time, place or manner restrictions, but Arizona state statute has made that more difficult.
