Celebrating sovereignty

The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation celebrated its Sovereignty Day on Thursday with the annual march from the tribal public safety building several miles to the recreation center.

The march commemorates the long march from Fort McDowell to the State Capitol building in 1992 to protest the confiscation of gaming center slot machines by federal agents on May 12, 1992.

Tribal members blockaded the exit from the casino parking lot refusing to allow the slot machines to be removed. The near two-week standoff that ensued resulted in gaming compacts between the State of Arizona and 16 tribes.
