A great time was had by all with the 4th of July celebration in the park. “It couldn't be done, too dangerous and too expensive” was the response when I asked about bringing back fireworks in the park for July 4th some two years ago. “Too many people leave town” was the other objection. Despite these objections -- the idea was pursued and with encouragement from my friend Phyliss saying “Columbus took a chance,” the rest is history.
The fire department gave the green light on safety and Phyliss Kern laid the groundwork for fundraising. Generous sponsorships from the town, businesses and private residents made fireworks and a July 4th celebration in the park a reality. More than 100 volunteers including AMVETS, Elks, friends and town staff worked hard to manage the record crowd.
The overwhelming response caused some vendors to run out of product early. Parents enjoyed the complimentary bounce houses, games and train ride that kept their kids entertained throughout the evening. There was no shortage of dancers to the music played by the Hilltop band and DJ Steve Grosz. Steve was also here in 2002, the last time fireworks were in the park for July 4th.

The Four Peaks Rotary added a somber touch with the flag display throughout the park. Record crowds filled establishments outside the park waiting for the fireworks. The economic impact was felt by the businesses surrounding the park with record crowds in their establishments.
The evening celebration ended with color- bursting fireworks in a community that values freedom and peace, thanking all who have and continue to make it happen in this great nation. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.
Now the planning for Oktoberfest on Sept. 26 and 27 in Fountain Park begins.
