The Fountain Hills Chamber Players will perform the first concert of its 2013-14 season on Sunday, Dec. 8.

This interesting and unique program, entitled “Music for Wind Ensembles,” will feature FHCP regulars Joshua Gardner, clarinet; Nikolas Flickinger, oboe; and Joseph Kluesener, bassoon.

Guest artists Stephanie Harger Gardner, clarinet, and Patrick Murphy, saxophone, will join them to present a program of quintets for reed instruments. They will perform the world premiere of a new work by American composer Kurt Mehlenbacher entitled “Journey on a Comet’s Tail.”

Several other quintets, with titles like “Four Letter Word,” “Bop” and “Circusmuziek,” all by living composers, are sure to add to the diversity and entertainment this program will bring to the audience.

Richard Strauss’s “Duo Concertino” for clarinet and bass clarinet will round out the program. Guest pianist Kathryn Christiensen will join the duo as accompanist.

Three additional subscription concerts are scheduled for the season on Jan. 19, Feb. 16 and March 16 and will present a variety of instrumental combinations.

As in the past, all programs are on Sunday afternoons at 3 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, located at 16150 E. El Lago Boulevard. Admission is $15 for single concerts and $50 for the four-program season.

Tickets can be bought at the door or ordered ahead of time by sending a check to FHCP, 17219 E. Hillcrest Dr., Fountain Hills, AZ, 85268.

Audiences are invited to mingle with the performers at a reception in Fellowship Hall following all concerts. An added performance will take place at Taliesin West on March 22 and will feature music for mixed ensembles.
