The Fountain Hills Chamber Players invite all classical music lovers to come to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Sunday, Jan. 19, to hear two beautiful works by two great composers, performed by members of the group and their guest artist, cellist Melissa Baum.

The program will open with Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D minor. Written a year before his death at age 39, this trio is full of energy and romantic lyricism.

Pianist Alice Brovan, violinist Cathy Worcester and cellist Mark Engelsman will perform this well-known and always enjoyable work.

Following an intermission, Baum will join Cathy Worcester and violinist Richard Chulpka, violist Patricia Cosand and Mark Engelsman to play Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, which includes a second cello in the usual string quartet makeup.

Written just two months before his death at the tragically young age of 31, this quintet was the fulfillment of a long- time wish Schubert had of composing a string quintet.

It is regarded as his finest chamber composition and one of the greatest works in the chamber music repertoire.

This program is the second of the FHCP 17th season. Two more concerts remain in the series, on Sunday, Feb. 16, and March 16, along with a program at Taliesin West on Saturday, March 22.

Admission for the regular series is $15. Tickets can be purchased at the door or ordered ahead of time by sending a check to Fountain Hills Chamber Players, P.O. Box 17622, Fountain Hills, AZ 85269.

All series concerts begin at 3 p.m. Shepherd of the Hills is located at 16150 E. El Lago Boulevard. Audiences are invited to mingle with the performers at a reception in the church lobby following all concerts.

Besides their regular season, the Chamber Players also perform for other community functions and have recently brought their outreach program to young children at the Fort McDowell H’man Shawa School.
