Charity bike group shops for warehouse space

Bobs Free Bikes, a non-profit organization that repairs bicycles and gives them to needy youngsters, has to move from its current headquarters.

At this time, its founder Bob Mandel doesn’t know where the operation will relocate after Sept. 15.

“I have no idea but we would like to stay in Fountain Hills,” said Mandel. “I think this is something nice for the town.”

Operating for seven months, he anticipates giving away close to 1,000 bicycles, mostly recycled but a few new ones.

“We’re just scratching the surface. It’s a simple concept. We’re a group of crazy people who enjoy giving away bikes,” said Mandel.

He would like to find owners for two three-wheel bikes that would be ideal for a special needs child or elderly individual.

The landlord of the present location on Enterprise Drive informed the non-profit charity that he intends to lease the units. Until the past month, Bobs Free Bikes paid no rent for its two units.

Mandel said he paid $550 for Aug. 15-Sept. 15 rent, plus a $290 Homeowners Association fee.

“I can’t keep doing that,” said Mandel whose organization has not been involved in fundraising. It depends upon volunteers to refurbish the bicycles before they are given to a child or needy adult.

Ideally, Mandel would like to partner with an individual who will donate between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet of vacant warehouse space on a monthly basis. The bikes would be securely stored and volunteers could repair them. The donated space would be tax-deductible and the charity would recognize the donor in its publications.

Anyone interested in donating space should contact Mandel at 480-861-2168.
