Chili Cook Off and Tasting this weekend

Posted

At least seven restaurants, including firefighters, have registered for the Chili Cook Off & Tasting from 3 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 9.

Organizer Phyliss Kern said she eventually anticipates between 50 and 70 professional and home cook participants.

The event will take place in the parking lot between Kern Realty and the Elks Lodge 16766 E. Parkview Drive.

Entry fees are $25 for home kitchen cooks and $50 for professional chefs. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.

General admission will be $5 for the public to cheer on their favorite cooks and taste the assortment of chili recipes.

The chili contest is named in memory of Arch John Mehaffey, a former resident who died in 2011. He was the co-owner of a small boat manufacturer.

Judging the contest will be the Cardinals’ mascot, Congressman David Schweikert, State Sen. John Kavanagh, Phil Yin, former commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7507, and former Phoenix Suns player Steve Hunter.

In connection with the event, children between the ages of three and 11 can enter a coloring contest. The design to be colored will appear in the Jan. 6 edition of The Fountain Hills Times. Mayor Linda Kavanagh will judge the entries. Target has donated three $25 gift certificates for the winners in each age category.

Direct TV will install two large screen televisions under tents so guests can watch playoff games.

The Ageing Hipsters, Behind the Badge band and The Hilltops will provide musical entertainment. Food vendors are welcome.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the Elks’ building maintenance fund.
