It’s been two days now and I still am humming the song, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”
Fountain Hills Theater’s production of this Disney classic is hilarious, good fun for all. Inventor Caractus Potts is convinced by his beloved children to purchase and restore an old race car. Keeping acting in the family, Potts and his children are performed with great skill by Chad Campbell and his children, Elizabeth and Benjamin.
In need of funds to pay for the car, Potts offers his latest invention, a candy whistle, to the local confectionary. Enter the confectionary’s daughter, Truly Scrumptious. In another outstanding performance, Kim Cooper-Schmidt makes Truly unforgettable.

Unfortunately, Barron Bomburst of Vulgaria wants the car, too. The Barroness, played to the hilt by Gina Tomkus, sends her spies, Boris and Goran, to steal the car. Grandpa Potts (Peter J. Hill) is kidnapped by mistake and taken to Vulgaria.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is restored, then chased by the wicked Boris and Goran, played with a comic twist by Roger Prenger and Patrick Russo. Chitty escapes capture by flying to Vulgaria. Yes, Chitty actually flies, and no, I am not going to tell you how! Just a bit of Peter J. Hill “magic.”
A standout performance is given by Asher Sheppard as the villainous Childcatcher, who lures the children with candy and whisks them off to the castle’s dungeon. The entire play is great fun with over the top comedy, great costumes, plus a happy ending. Chitty is flying again through September 18. Catch her before she flies away forever.
