History of faith
The first Catholic Mass in Fountain Hills was celebrated in the community trailer at Fountain Lake on Sept. 9, 1973, according to a Linda Kavanagh, Parish councilmember and the chair of the communications committee for the Jubilee.
As the mission grew, the weekend Masses moved to the new town community center on Saguaro Boulevard (now the home of Fountain Hills Theater).
Ascension officially became a parish on Sept. 15, 1976, and Fr. Paul Slanina, O.P., was the founding pastor. After a site change, the present church was built on Fountain Hills Boulevard. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated by Fr. Paul on Sept. 13, 1980.
Year-long celebration
Throughout the year, parishioners and community members look forward to a variety of events, including:
*Community outreach initiatives: The church will expand its outreach efforts, working on new projects to serve the local community and beyond.
*Special religious and worship events: The year will feature unique religious services and spiritual programs that reflect the church’s rich history and mission.
*Celebratory gatherings: Various social and celebratory events will bring the Ascension community together to share memories and celebrate this milestone.
“This is a momentous occasion for our church family,” said Fr. Jilson Panakkal. “We are excited to share this special year with the entire community. Our goal is to honor the legacy of those who built this church while also strengthening our commitment to our neighbors and future generations.”
The Jubilee year will officially begin in November 2025 and details about specific events and programs will be announced in the coming months. The grand celebration will take place in November 2026, with a climactic event to honor the 50th anniversary.
The Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., invites everyone to join in this year of reflection, gratitude and celebration. Stay tuned for more information on how to participate and be part of this historic event.
