Churches explore bridging differences in uncivil times

The Fountain Hills Interfaith Alliance will facilitate a series of three evening forums, “Civil Conversation in Uncivil Times,” on three Tuesdays this month.

The informative gatherings are designed to help people develop practical skills to establish relationships between those who have different racial, political, gender, religious and/or cultural backgrounds.

Participants will be exposed to and be given the opportunity to practice social and relational tools that can move potentially confrontational moments to opportunities to engage in civil dialogue.

Each 90-minute session, starting at 6:30 p.m., will include an overview, opportunities for conversation, roleplaying demonstrations, small group discussion and video input.

Participation is free, although donations will be accepted to support the work of the Interfaith Alliance. Light refreshments will be provided.

The first session will be Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Church of the Ascension. The program will consist of an introduction and overview of the themes assuming positive intent and the difference between dialogue and debate.

The Fountains Methodist Church will be the location for the Jan. 15 meeting. The theme, “Changing Worldviews: We’re All Biased,” will explore skills necessary to actively listen and demonstrate humility.

“Deepening Relationships and Understandings” will be the theme of the third session, Jan. 22, at New Journey Lutheran Church.

The program will examine how a little bit of discomfort is OK and how bridging the divide will take courage to speak up.
