Claire Dickey Cartmell died January 12, 2026 at her home in Fountain Hills, AZ. Claire was loved and will be sorely missed. She was a very kind, caring and compassionate person. Who centered her life around family and friends. Born, Claire Estelle Dickey, May 3, 1931 to Martha Huber Dickey and James K. Dickey of Chicago, IL. She is preceded in death by her husband William C. Cartmell and Grandchild Ross Cartmell Haggerty and her 2 brothers and her sister. She is survived by her 5 children Crystal Cartmell, James Cartmell, Alan Cartmell, Catherine Cartmell, and Carol Barman, 12 Grandchildren and currently 19 Great-grandchildren. Claire taught junior and senior high school and adult education and was a guest lecturer at Purdue University. She graduated from Purdue and Valparaiso Universities with a Masters in Education and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. Claire was very active in her church and her community both in Crown Point, IN (where she lived for many years) and Fountain Hills AZ. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, she participated as a Church Elder, Church Treasurer, Clerk of Session, Moderator of Presbyterian Women, Vacation Bible School Director, Sunday School Teacher, Women’s Circle Leader, Choir member, Interim Superintendent of Sunday School, and a Youth Leader. Active in her community, Claire was a leader of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4H, a President of Lake County AAUW, serving for 9 years on the Board of Directors, and on the Regional Scholarship Review Committee, President of Lake County IN Home Economists, Parliamentarian, Regional By Laws Chair, served on the Advisory Committee of Lake County Head Start and Consumer Education programs, Teacher Union Secre-tary, and held various Professional Society memberships/officer roles, locally she was a member of PEO, Questers, Sonoran Club, Walking Club, various book clubs, numerous bridge clubs, an Angel to the local Men’s Club, and Phoenix Symphony Auxiliary. Claire was voracious reader and particularly enjoyed being with family, musical activities, traveling and playing cards. A memorial Service will be held at a future date at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
